Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) Cladding

Cladding, or weld hard-facing, is a procedure that is complementary to thermal spray coating.

Thermaspray specialises in applying this technology through using a Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) welding process.

PTA welding is a hard-facing process that melts a filler material in powder form with the surface of a component to produce metallurgically bonded overlays.

It is designed to resist erosive- corrosive- or abrasive wear.

Overlays that specifically resist these forms of wear can be applied to a variety of base materials.

The advantages of PTA welding over conventional weld hard-facing technologies are that PTA weld overlays are characterised by low levels of inclusions, oxides and discontinuities, and the weld hard-facing closely mimics the metallurgical properties of the base material.

The careful control of heat input makes it possible to control weld dilution to less than 10%, which is critical for many high-performance alloys and applications.
